What annual accounts are for
Every limited company has to prepare statutory accounts at the end of its financial year and file them with Companies House. HMRC also gets a copy with the company's corporation tax return. For sole traders and partnerships, year-end accounts are what your tax return is built from.
Accounts are a legal requirement, but they're also a useful record of how the business has done. We make sure they're right — and that you understand them.
The deadlines
For most private limited companies:
- Accounts are due at Companies House 9 months after the financial year ends.
- Corporation tax is usually payable 9 months and 1 day after the year ends.
- The CT600 tax return is due 12 months after the year ends.
- The confirmation statement is due at least once every 12 months, separately from the accounts.
Companies House charges automatic penalties for late accounts, so we work to your deadline from the start of the year, not the end.
How we prepare them
If you keep your books in Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or FreeAgent, we work directly in your software. We review the year, make the year-end adjustments — depreciation, accruals and prepayments, stock — and check the director's loan account. You get draft accounts and a short call to talk them through before you approve them.
The right format for your size
Small companies can usually file simpler accounts at Companies House. We'll prepare the version that meets the rules for your company's size and explain what will be on the public record.
