What Making Tax Digital for VAT means

Making Tax Digital for VAT applies to every VAT-registered business. You must keep your VAT records digitally and file your VAT returns through software that connects to HMRC. Logging in to HMRC's website and typing in the figures is no longer allowed for most businesses.

The rules are simple to follow once the right set-up is in place. That's what we do.

Software that fits how you work

For most businesses, the easiest route is cloud bookkeeping software — Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or FreeAgent — connected to your bank. Transactions come in automatically, VAT is coded as you go and the return is built from your records.

If you'd rather keep your spreadsheets, that can work too. Bridging software takes the figures from your spreadsheet and sends them to HMRC. We'll set it up and check that the figures move digitally from your records to the return.

Digital links

HMRC's rules say that once data is in your digital records, it must move digitally between programs — no copying and pasting totals by hand, no retyping figures from one spreadsheet into another. We review how your records flow and fix any gaps.

Filed every quarter

Once you're set up, we can prepare and file every VAT return for you, checking each one before it goes. You get a clear summary of what you owe and when to pay.
